This course follows on from our Working With Neurodivergent Clients in Conflict - Foundations course. You are assumed to have completed this to understand the content in this follow up course.

Topics covered

The Family as a neuro-mixed system

Explore the dynamics of the neurodiverse family, how co-regulation and dysregulation works in a family context, the family spoon economy, masking collapse at home, and the best interests of the neurodivergent child.

Neurodiverse couples

Explore the double empathy problem in intimate relationships, compare mixed and same neurotype couples, discover the impact of rejection sensitivity, alexithymia and demand avoidance in relationships, and how repair can be misread.

Conflict over a child's neurotype

Explore the dynamics of parental conflict over a child's neurotype, the different layers of this kind of conflict, identify practical flashpoints, learn about school can't and how it plays out in parental conflict.

Family violence and neurodivergence

Explore the ways that family violence and neurodivergence may intersect; compare coercive control to other types of conflict; contrast meltdown, dysregulation and abuse; identify how abuse can play out through a partner's and a child's neurodivergence; learn ways to screen effectively with neurodivergence parties.

Flexibility and transparency

Consider aspects of family dispute resolution and how they might be adapted to better suit neurodivergent clients. Examine format choices, room set ups, how to manage decision making and agreement, as well as escalation and dysregulation in the room.

4 hours of video lessons

The course includes four hours of video lessons, each no longer than 15 minutes to allow you to absorb the material in small chunks.

What students are saying

This course is a must not just for anyone working in conflict resolution, but for anyone living in our diverse world. Once again, Samantha uses her gift for simplifying complex topics and delivering them in a way that is accessible, analytical and enjoyable. The course is short enough to make it easy for busy people to find the time to do it (for me, it was my weekend mornings in bed, just to prove how much I enjoyed it), and long enough to teach you the important stuff. Every part of the course, every example she gave, made me think of someone I encountered in my work, my life, and how I might have misinterpreted certain behaviours. Thank you Sam for enriching my practice and my life.

This course provides a solid base for understanding neurodivergent experiences of conflict, with a strong focus on autism. Samantha Hardy uses lived experience and scholarship to offer understanding and suggest action when facing a neurodiverse conflict resolution setting. The approach is welcoming and engaging and the information is thought-provoking. This course is essential for any mediator or arbitrator wanting to provide neuroinclusive services, which, hopefully, is everyone.
