Mediation has a clear structure.

Preparation.
The session.
Agreement.
Closure.

And then the parties leave.

In Mediation, we invest heavily in what happens inside the room and give far less attention to what happens immediately after, and in the weeks that follow. We don’t have a textbook approach to what a Mediator’s role should be, if any, once a session formally concludes and we know that we all bring different approaches.

This session explores the concept of mediation ‘aftercare’ – not as an add-on or optional part of the process, but as a critical (and often overlooked) dimension of practice.

We will consider:

Whether, when and how Mediator's follow up

The role of check-ins and debriefing with parties, referrers, or both

What shifts when a mediation has gone well… or not so well

Ethical considerations, boundaries and Mediator responsibility

How aftercare can support implementation, accountability and early re-engagement
